How did you get into Naturopathic Oncology?
While completing my undergraduate degree at UBC, I was offered an exceptional opportunity to be involved in a clinical trial at the BC Cancer Agency Vancouver as a research associate. It was an incredible experience and affirmed my desire for a career in oncology, but it also opened my eyes to the limitations of care in standard medical oncology, especially back then (in the mid-to-late 1990’s). By the time I completed my 5-year commitment to the cancer agency, I knew there had to be more we could offer in oncology. At that time, a friend spoke to me about naturopathic medicine. As I learned about naturopathic medicine, I realized NM was the medical platform I would use to establish a practice of whole-person integrative oncology. The OncANP was instrumental in building my knowledge of evidence-informed naturopathic oncology.
What do you do during your downtime and/or what do you do for fun?
As a clinic owner and medical director of a large integrative centre – downtime is often in short supply! I enjoy being physically active so exercise is part of my daily morning routine. My favourite time is spent on vacation with my daughter and my husband. I covet that family time more than ever.
What are you most grateful for in your practice of Naturopathic oncology?
In my practice, I am most grateful for the type of patients I have the privilege to serve. I feel honoured every day to provide care for individuals who are dealing with a difficult situation and have placed their trust in me; to guide and walk beside them as they navigate these waters. Equally, I am grateful for the amazing oncology providers I have the opportunity to collaborate with.
